It is important to first know the purpose of buying a horse (what you want the horse for), and then you need to match the horse with the purpose.

The physical attributes, strength, size and age of the horse should all be suited for the purpose that you need the horse for.

Breeds have different strengths and weaknesses and narrowing down your horse search is made easier if you know what breed is well suited for your purpose.

Do you know what type of riding you will be doing on the horse? Do you know what type of training facility is available for where the horse will be boarded if not on your property?

If the boarding place is on the lower maintenance end, then you will need a horse with fewer needs that can live well in a less expensive and less demanding environment.

Jumping, riding saddle seat, show and other equestrian activities will need a higher level of maintenance and the latest technology and a horse that is bred for these equestrian activities.

Is your horse going to be shown, or used in a school or on trail rides? When you know the answers to these questions than you are ready to decide on a breed.

If you are purchasing a horse for an inexperienced child, first time horse owner, or for a school, you will need to look at a well-trained quarter horse or an older Tennessee walking horse.

It is important that the horse have calm, even temperaments. You do not want a too large horse, especially for a child. Both of these horses have comfortable gaits and are kind.

If you are buying a horse for trail riding Quarter horses or paso finos are excellent choices.

These horses have good endurance and can cover a lot of ground. They are strong, well-built horses that are incredibly intelligent, calm, alert and very comfortable to ride.

If you are purchasing a horse for show jumping Thoroughbreds are excellent jumpers. They have the speed and agility needed for the sport.

The breed is very excitable which may be a drawback, but they are usually very good at galloping and enjoy jumping.

They have higher knee action and a long, low stride that is perfect for show jumping. Other horses that do well in show jumping are Dutch Warmblood and Selle Francais.

If your purpose for buying a horse is huntseat or saddleseat riding than Arabians are a breed to look at. Arabians have really good endurance and are a kind horse.

They are another breed that can be excitable though, so be aware of this. They are beautiful horses so would be a horse that would fit well in a variety of environments.

They are a medium-sized horse and therefore are comfortable for most people to ride.
