Finding the right horse for you is the first step to getting involved as a pet or as a working animal. However many people say you should not treat horses as pets.

If you are looking for a horse, one of the main considerations you will need to make is thinking about the type of horse you will be able to buy.

Every horse will have specific characteristics that can provide you with the best options depending on what usage you require from it.

The evolution of horses comes from various genetic changes that have been made over many thousands of years.

Primitive horses are known to be from Europe and Asia, and breeds at this time were classified as small horses, desert horses and larger horses.  These then changed as these horses were brought to different areas of the earth in order to adapt to different or specific climates.

Through this evolution several body types have evolved from the horse.  For example, some horses are larger than others.  Some horses will have more muscle in the front, while others will have shapes more unique to their breed.

The shape of the horse will determine if it is better as a breeding horse, pet, working horse or better for children.

Horses are typically divided into three areas for their body type.

The first is heavy horses, which are more bulky and muscular.  In contrast to this are light horses, which are skinnier and smaller.  The third type of horse is a pony, which is the smallest breed of horse known today.

There are various different breeds of horses available today.  Each of these species is unique in their own way.  The color of the horse is usually determined by their specific breed.  The breed also determines the characteristics these breeds have.

Some horse breeds are more assertive than others, for example, some breeds specialize in activities such as racing and knowing the type of breeds available will help you to find the best type of horse for you.

Horses are also characterized by what they are used for.  For example, there are specific horses used for food, then there are horses considered best at helping with farming or working.

Horses are also characterized by their ability to race, be parts of other sports, or their ability to be a pet. Others are best used for transportation.

One thing several people often make the mistake of is considering mules as horses. These, however, are not pure bred horses, so are not considered a specific horse breed.  They are usually a combination of a male donkey and a female horse.  These will usually not be able to reproduce, but are known to be good working animals.

The evolution of horses has allowed for a variety of types, body shapes and uses.  These varieties have allowed a huge range of horse types to suit every possible work and play situation.

If you are interested in horses, one of the areas to research is the different breeds available.  It can be a very interesting subject and can also assist you in deciding the breed to go for if you are interested in buying a horse.
