For those people looking into owning a horse they will first need to obtain specific types of equipment and gear in order to keep the horse comfortable.

There are various types of equipment which can be used for a horse as well as certain types of equipment needed in order to properly maintain your animal.

By ensuring you know what to buy equipment wise before you buy a horse; you will be able to make sure your horse moves right into a home which is comfortable and stress free.

The first set of equipment you will need to get for your horse is for food and water.

A large water tub will be necessary for the horse to stay hydrated.  It is also an option to get a water tub for both the shelter outside.

If you live in an area that has colder temperatures and there is a possibility the water may freeze, you should consider buying a water heater for the tub. This will allow the horse to have access to their water both day and night.

You will also need to get a tub for the hay.  Hay should never be put on the ground for the horse, but should be stuffed into a net and attached midway up the wall. It lasts longer and prevents the horse from becoming bored when you are not there. Another reason not to put hay on the ground is the possibility of vermin infesting the hay.

You also need to think about maintaining your horse’s shelter or stable. It will be necessary to clean out the horse shelter and you may need to check the pasture for cleanliness every once in a while.

A pitch fork or manure fork can be a boon when you are cleaning out the stable.  You can also get a stable broom for keeping the area clean in between major cleanings of the barn.  You will also need a wheelbarrow to take the old bedding etc out and to put the newer in.

You will also need equipment for cleaning and grooming your horse. Grooming your horse is a very important procedure and should be done using the correct brushes and other cleaning materials.

It is especially important that you brush and groom your horse after riding him as he will be sweaty.

You will need a halter and lead ropes to ensure your horse stays in one place whilst you are grooming him. You can then tie him to a fence and gain easy access to all parts of his body.

A hoof pick is an important piece of equipment you will need as a horses hooves can become very dirty.

For his body, there is a choice of combs. The first 2 combs are a curry comb and a body brush. These are used to clean the horse’s body by removing sweat and dust etc.  The third brush is used to comb the horse’s mane and tail.

For riding, you will also need specific equipment. The first piece is a saddle blanket which helps keep the sweat off of the horse. Then you need a saddle.  (This must be fitted expertly to avoid discomfort to your horse).

You will also need a bridle in order to help steer the horse whilst you are sat in the saddle.

Buying the right equipment before you even start to think about riding a horse is important and should not be neglected.
